Short description
This statuette came from the collection of the opera singer Gennaro Evangelista (called Evan) Gorga, which was given to the Italian state in 1948 and was intended for the most part for the Palazzo Venezia museum. Identified by the number 74 in Gorga’s collection, the work depicts a crucified Christ, its style consonant with 16th century Rome. The arms and the head can be adjusted, to allow for the piece to be used to depict the crucifixion or the deposition, depending on the time of the liturgical year. The small size also indicates it was used for processions. It is in very poor condition. Apart from the areas that have been repainted, the work has lost some parts, including the right arm and front part of the right foot and the head has also been removed. The wood itself appears quite decayed in several places.
