Short description
Ferdinand II became king of the Two Sicilies, adopting highly liberal policies early in his reign and granting amnesty to those who had died during the Naples uprising in 1820. Soon after, though, a period of absolute rule began. His reign was characterized by edicts, police crackdowns, and corruption. His savage repression of Sicily, including the attack on Messina, earned him the sobriquet Re Bomba, or the King “Bomb”.
