Short description
This sculpture came from the collection of the opera singer Gennaro Evangelista (called Evan) Gorga, which was given to the Italian state in 1948 and was intended for the most part for the Palazzo Venezia museum. The work, depicting God the Father emerging from clouds, is in poor condition, mainly due to the badly decayed wood; nonetheless, the figure has a certain stylistic quality, particularly in the positioning of the head and the movement of the long beard that fans out over his chest. It can be dated to early 18th century Rome and derives perhaps from elements of the work of Pierre Le Gros the Younger, exemplified in the altar of St. Ignatius in the church of Gesù in Rome.
